To God Our Father
My word of the
year being prayerful, I have started a
devotional on the YouVersion app for the Bible on my phone called The Power Of A Simple Prayer by Max
Lucado. Today he talked about something
I really needed to hear. Prayers don’t have
to be eloquent and lengthy, but a simple conversation.
He says “Remember
the One who hears your prayers is your Daddy.
You don’t need to wow him with eloquence” Jesus even said that its not super important
how you say what you need to say. The more
words are not the better. Jesus says in
Matthew 6:7, “Don’t ramble like heathens who…talk a lot”.
The truth in
the matter is that we really don’t have to say a lot as He already knows what
is on our hearts and on our minds. It’s
nice to be able to talk to Him and tell him what we need to but we don’t have
to worry about stumbling over our words to try to get them out just right.
Lucado went
on to say, “vocabulary and geography might impress people but not God. There is no panel of angelic judges with
number cards.” No one saying “Wow
Lachelle that’s a great prayer, we give you a 10 out of 10” or “Wow Lachelle
that prayer was awful, you really need to go back and practice that more before
God can hear it”. When you think about
it that way then why do we (I) worry so much about making sure we (I)I have just the
right words when saying prayers for others or if I need a specific thing looked
out for? Why do we (I) get so anxious
about praying when all we (I) really need to do is talk to God just like we (I) would if we (I) were talking to our (my) parents and asking for help?
Like Jesus
said, no need to ramble or story tell, just talk. After reading this devotional this morning I
am going to try to approach my prayers tonight in a different way. Even the prayers I say with my daughter
before she lays down, teach her to talk to God just as she speaks to us, no need
to be super eloquent in it. Pray with
JOY, Jesus first (thank him for everything of the day), Others second (pray for
their specific needs) and the You (ask
God for help with what you need and are thankful for) but do it like a normal
day to day conversation!
